Parish Creek Landing is located in Shady Side along the banks of Parrish Creek, a tributary of the West River. In 2023, Arundel Rivers worked with the property owners to install two projects on the property: a conservation planting and a rain garden to capture and filter runoff from Woods Wharf Road. Both the conservation planting and the rain garden provide stormwater filtration and treatment before the flows reach Parrish Creek. In addition to installing this green infrastructure, Parish Creek Landing is a certified Maryland Clean Marina.
When it rains, the rain garden fills with stormwater, allow for infiltration. Rather than polluted stormwater to running directly into the creek, it seeps into the ground, recharging groundwater and filtering pollutants like nitrogen and phosphorus while trapping sediment. The native plants in the garden are hardy and naturally adapted to wetter environments - they thrive in these conditions. The nearby conservation planting is filled with natives such as black-eyed Susan and cone flowers, perfect for providing habitat for our favorite pollinators like butterflies and bees. These native plants we installed with volunteers aren’t just beautiful enhancements to the site and wonderful habitat for local wildlife - their strong roots promote better stormwater absorption into the ground.
