Summer camp is in full swing this July, and your Arundel Rivers Education team is in the field with youth across our watersheds four days of the week. So far this year, we’ve led over 600 youth in environmental exploration, with lots more to come. These kids have
used a seine net to catch critters, including blue crabs, spotted whiff, perch, sticklebacks, mummichogs, more grass shrimp than we can count, and diving beetles
evaluated river health based on their catches and turbidity data they collected themselves
measured salinity to see if their local waterway could support oysters (the overwhelming answer? yes!)
learned what a watershed is and how what we do on land impacts our water
identified invasive species on their campuses and learned how they spread (and how to stop them!)
discussed access to the water and how nature helps people— ecologically, economically, emotionally, and gastronomically (because those oysters and native blackberries sure taste good!)
built water filters out of junk materials to see how hard oysters work to filter our water
And so much more! Helping our community gain an understanding and appreciation of our rivers is vital to our wellbeing– that of the river and us as people. There is still plenty of summer left, with a lot more to explore, including a new shoreline planting at Camp Letts, Harness Creek seining with the Marshall Hope Learning Center, student action projects, and a whole lot of love for our rivers.
