Current Conditions
The Sunny Shores community and Arundel Rivers are partnering to stabilize and restore approximately 1,900 feet of stream flowing into the South River. The proposed project site lies at the bottom of a stream valley that collects stormwater runoff from the surrounding communities of Sunny Shores and Bon Haven, located at the valley’s upper edges. Stormflows transport sediment from the rapidly eroding stream channel, depositing it first on the Sunny Shores community waterfront parcel before entering the South River and creating a significant sediment plume. The community’s recreation area regularly gets washed out by these flows. Additionally, the volume and speed of the runoff entering the community property have begun to compromise the only access road into the Sunny Shores community property. The slopes supporting the road are rapidly eroding and becoming an additional sediment source, further exacerbating the complex issues on site.
The goals of this stream restoration project are to enhance stream habitat; reduce sediment, nitrogen, and phosphorus entering the river; detain and slow runoff; and provide stable conveyance of flows through the stream channel.
