Before/Current Conditions
When Pine Whiff Beach called on Arundel Rivers for guidance, their community property was eroding at a rate of 3.23 feet each year with a failing bulkhead and regular flooding, often rendering the parcel unusable. The waterfront property is approximately 250 linear feet, partially held together by the failing bulkhead and partially natural.
The purpose of this project is to mitigate further erosion of the community’s parcel. This will protect a beloved piece of the community while safeguarding the South River’s health. The erosion that the property is currently facing continually pulls sediment into the water, clouding Almshouse Creek and contributing to the many factors diminishing our river’s health. A living shoreline will make this shoreline more resilient as we face storm surges of increasing intensity and frequency while drastically enhancing the habitat value for local as well as migratory wildlife. The future marsh will be greatly appreciated and enjoyed by shorebirds, nesting horseshoe crabs, and countless aquatic species.
